6.4. Public Sector Use-Case

In the public sector, TM is in use as part of the Joint Information Systems Committee’s (JISC www.jisc.ac.uk) project to provide a secure message service based on SOAP transport over HTPPS that integrates with its data transformation capabilities. This architecture (see Figure 8) provides a reliable web-service messaging service that allows any data type to be carried and transformed between a consortium of universities, colleges and schools in the South West of England.

The SHELL project aims to allow a group of educational establishments to exchange student-related data as IMS LIP payloads, an educational XML standard within the secure messaging system, thus allowing institutions to integrate their course delivery and offer more varied and better-managed education to their students. In addition, all student records are maintained in a Learner Record Database, intended to give students access to their education data for life.

JISC Student Record System Overview

For this project ETL Solutions created transforms that operated in the secure messaging environment, converting data from various university, college and school databases for transfer to the Learner Record Database and the Partner Institutions. It also provided transforms that allowed students and supervisors to access student data via the internet.
